Winter Hibernation & Permission to Say "No"

Writer: Jenn BauerJenn Bauer

In nature, winter is a time of hibernation. Mother Earth's theme is stillness, rest and going inward.

Contradictingly, our society amps up its hustle and bustle in November and December. In addition to our usual busy-ness, we pile on holiday parties, shopping, decorating, fancy cooking and family gatherings. Is it any wonder why this time of year can be so exhausting?

If you're willing to give yourself permission, I invite you to add more rest and quiet stillness into each day. Anything that mimics the animals we admire and their natural winter habits is a good place to start.

Are you familiar with the Danish term Hygge? It means a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. My hunch is we could all use more Hygge in our lives.

If you're willing, create a corner or space of your home that is Hygge. A comfortable, cushy chair with a cozy blanket and a favorite book. Maybe you bring a cup of coffee, tea or hot cocoa. It can be surrounded with pictures of your favorite scenes and people, and maybe there's a diffuser with your favorite scent filling the air. Whatever feels Hygge to you, please give your body and soul this cozy bliss.

And, if you're willing, giving yourself permission to say "no" to anything that feels energy draining. It's okay to not do and participate in all the things. When the fear of missing out feels strong, remember that you and your mental, emotional and physical health is worth infinitely more.

May you find quiet stillness.

May you feel supported in every decision.

May you have courage to prioritize your health.

May you enjoy the comforts of rest and going inward.
